Arbour Hill: Arbour Hill Cemetery

  • Lifetime Dubliner Eamon Carroll took us on a tour of Dublin's history focusing on the independence movement of the early 1900s. One of our first stops was tranquil and seldom-visited Arbor Hill Cemetery where 14 of the leaders of the "Easter Rising" of 1916 are buried. At the rear of the cemetery is a wall with the Irish Proclamation of Independence written in Irish and English.

Arbor Hill is a military cemetery managed by the Irish Department of Defense. This is the ideal stop after a visit to Kilmainham Prison.

Arbor Hill Cemetery is located on the north side of the Liffey, not far from Phoenix Park. From Wolf Tone Quay, you can take Temple Street West north, up the hill to Arbor Hill Road. The cemetery is near the back of the Collins Military Barracks Museum.

Off The Beaten Path: Phoenix Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • One morning I got up early to go for a jog... I ended up running to and through the People's Garden, and past the Wellington Memorial in Phoenix Park, just on the north side of the River Liffey near Heuston Station. Extending three miles along the Liffey, Phoenix Park is known as the largest city park in all of Europe.

The main sites in the park include the Dublin Zoo (established in 1830--the 3rd oldest public zoo in the world), the Wellington Memorial (erected in 1817), the Public Gardens (designed in 1864), the US Ambassador's residence, and a white cross marking the location where Pope John Paul spoke in 1979.

Nice page on Dublin. It’s been 10 years since I visited Dublin. I missed out on the Guinness Brewery tour, but definitely partook of the pints while traveling throughout Ireland.

Nicely written overview of Dublin. From the photo Christ Church is a flying buttress architecture cathedral, so just after 1000 AD, it must be one of the earlier ones.

Guinness is actually not a hugely popular drink in Ireland among the younger generation. What is popular espiecially in the SE of the country is a large bottle of guinness off the shelf. It's a different taste altogether from the pint.

Just checked out your Dublin page. It's a fantastic city! Loved your pages. I wish I had seen more of it last year. Cheers
