"Short trip to Malmö" Malmö by Ewingjr98

I visited Malmö while on a trip to Copenhagen. It is an inexpensive one-hour boat ride across the Sound (or you can take the train or drive across the newly opened 16 km Oresound "Fixed Link" bridge/tunnel). Malmö is a beautiful and historic city, and certainly worth a visit if you have an extra day in your itinerary while in Copenhagen.

Malmö was established in the 1200s as a community of fishermen and farmers. The city was a part of Denmark until 1658.

Malmö's harbor was constructed in the 1700s, which led to the growth and prosperity of the region. Malmö quickly changed from a quiet fishing town to a busy commercial port. The shipbuilding industry also established its importance during this period.

Today Malmö has a diverse population of approximately 265,000 people, with one quarter (65,000) of them being foreign-born!

Canal & St Peters

After arriving on the ferry at Malmö Harbor, we began a walking tour of the city. Our one must-see activity was the medieval Malmöhus Castle, built in the 14th Century. This is considered to be the oldest surviving renaissance-era castle in Scandinavia.

We spent our entire visit in Malmö's historic Old City. Of course, we stopped at the Main Square (Stortorget) and Little Square (Lille Torg), where the architecture is quaint yet fascinating, and cafes abound. Another highlight of the visit was St. Peter's Church, built in the 1300s.

Later in the day, Malmöfest was beginning to get busy, so we walked the crowded streets, ate some food, and listened to a few bands perform.
