Favorite Thing: French Money is called the "Franc" -- oops! I haven't been to france in a few years. French money is now called the Euro, and it's used by most of western Europe. I guess my Francs are collectors items now. Money is never much of a problem in France. Credit Cards are accepted everywhere and ATMs accepting US cards are very common. The only money problem you'll have is trying to afford the luxury items -- the wine and cheese, the boat trip on the Seine, coffee and croissants, and shopping on the Champs Elysees! Luckily the best things in Paris are free: walking throughout the city, visiting the Notre Dame, seeing the wonderful architecture, and talking with the locals.

General Tips: Paying to use the toilet...

Favorite Thing: Throughout much of Europe, it is common to pay to use a public restroom. Usually some poor soul will sit in front of a bowl of change and occasionally wipe down the sink or toilet. Typically, a few coins is enough, but sometimes they will ask for a certain minimum amount such as US$0.25. On my visit to Versailles, the entrepreneurial French had taken this to a new level. No only did they charge to use the toilet, but they had a cash register, gave change, and even gave a receipt!!! They turned paying to pee into a real money-making venture! This is my only cherished souvenir from Versailles!

Favorite Thing: "Cafe Ole" is not some unusual kind of Spanish coffee, nor the name of a Mexican Cantina. Instead, that is what you had better ask for if you want American-style coffee in Paris. So it's actually spelled "Cafe au Lait" (coffee with milk)... I guess I saw too many Speedy Gonzalez cartoons as a child... I'll never forget the first time my father order "coffee" in Paris and ended up with his first sip of thick, black espresso. He's a regular coffee drinker, but this was far too rich for his taste. After that, we all learned our lesson and enjoyed our cafe with milk!

You'll be happy to learn that some of toilets in Paris are free now, just one of the many improvements made by the current mayor since his election six years ago. | gilabrand Thu Feb 15, 2007 09:18 UTC A mad dash across 10 lanes of traffic, huh? Talk of suicidal... | Henrik_rrb Tue Sep 14, 2004 03:20 UTC Hi Joe! Great job on your Paris-page, I really enjoyed reading!
