Bus -- Singapore to JB - Johor Bahru
Bus -- Singapore to JB

The bus from Singapore is a cheap, easy, and convenient way to get to Johor Bahru. I took the express bus from the Arab Street area (at Queen Street & Sultan Street). At the station, just wait near the sign for the Johor Bahru Express bus, then pay on the bus. One-way fare is only a few US dollars.

The ride north to the causeway takes only 45 minutes to one hour. When you arrive on the Singapore side of the causeway, you have to go through immigration & customs to exit the country (so bring your passport!). After immigration, you will go back outside and board the next available JB Express Bus. Just follow the signs to the bus area. Buses arrive and depart approx every 10-15 minutes from 6:30 AM to midnight.

The ride across the causeway takes just five minutes. When you arrive at JB, you must go through customs again. After customs, you may walk right into JB!

I don't think they have a website, but the phone number is 6292-8149 from within Singapore, 02-6292 8149 from Malaysia, 65-6292 8149 from anywhere else internationally!

Taxi

Taxi is one of the few means of transportation available for tourists within Johor Bahru. It is very inexpensive if you can get the driver to run the meter. However, if he does not run the meter, you will get "taken for a ride" both literally and figuratively. Do NOT take a taxi if the driver refuses to run the meter!

You might be able to negotiate a reasonable price prior to the ride, but you are taking a risk.

Walking around the waterfront - Johor Bahru

Walking around the waterfront

Walking in JB

Despite what taxi drivers and other con-artists might tell you, walking is a good way to a see a lot of Johor Bahru. The problem is good, reliable maps are hard to find.

After getting though the border crossing, walk due north and you will quickly arrive in the city center. On your way, you will pass a money exchange and dozens of taxi drivers. One street to the right takes you to the train station. If you head left and walk towards the water, you will go through the Waterfront area, and approach the State Secretariat Building and the Abu Bakar museum.

Bus -- JB to Singapore - Johor Bahru
Bus -- JB to Singapore

There are at least three different bus companies running from the JB border crossing into Singapore. The bus station is located between the JB Train Station and the border crossing.

If you want to take the express bus to Arab Street, you must purchase a ticket before you go through immigration and customs. I think these tickets are sold in a building across the street from the train station. I did not know this, so when I got to the bus stop I couldn't get on! And of course, you can't go back out of immigration into JB!

Luckily one of the other bus companies allows you to pay when you board the bus. This bus offers local service to Singapore with several stops along the way. I just got off at customs in Singapore and took a taxi to the nearest subway station. This bus driver did not give change, so you need to have exact fare (of about US $0.35!).

Once you decide which bus to take, just line up in the queues outside of immigration. Buses depart approx every 15 minutes during the day.
