"Cass Scenic Railroad State Park" Cass Scenic Railroad State Park by jmpncsu

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia in the Allegheny Mountains. The park is unique in that it consists primarily of a railroad track leading up the mountain, as well as the town of Cass and part of the summit of bald knob. Cass was an old company town built around milling and the timber industry. When the work dried up, the state purchased the railroad and operates it as a tourist destination.

There are two train rides - a two-hour round trip ride to Whitaker Station and a 4.5-hour round trip ride to Bald Knob, the third highest point in West Virginia. The trains use original coal-burning steam engines built in the early 20th century. Cass is a particularly good destination in the fall when foliage is peaking - the views from the train and at the two stops are phenomenal. However, beware of coal smoke. Wear dark colored clothes and be careful with any respiratory conditions, because the coal smoke and embers can blow into the passenger cars.
