Snowshoe is an unincorporated area in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Nestled within the Allegheny Mountains, Snowshoe is best known for the ski resort. In fact, Snowshoe Mountain is the name of the resort, not the actual mountain itself. The mountain is Cheat Mountain, which includes the second highest point in West Virginia - Thorny Flat on Chest Mountain rises to an elevation of 4,848 feet above sea level. Due to the high elevation, the area receives has lower temperatures and receives more snowfall than many other areas in the region with an average of 180 inches of snowfall per year.
