What a beautiful city!I have not been to Switzerland before and whilst I enjoyed Bern, liked Zurich and Geneva, I loved Luzern. It is compact and very easy to get around, and the public transport is seriously efficient. The tourist office workers are incredibly helpful and speak superb English, and made my stay a lot easier.

If you hold a Swiss rail card, then you can travel free on the boats crossing lake Luzern. It saved me approximately £45.00 sterling and as Switzerland is quite expensive, this was a major saving. On a sunny day and wam sunshine even a short trip was a delight.

Mark Twain was exactly right , describing this as a very sad monument, the pain on the Lions face is sad to look at.It was also sad that many tourists treat it as just an item to be ticked off their list.It should be a quiet place, but the hordes of tourists shouting and carrying on, made it anything but.It is a war memorial of sorts and should be treated as such with respect.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:lovely old city, friendly people, worth seeing.
  • Cons:expensive to eat out, but so is the rest of Switzerland
  • In a nutshell:compact but bijou
