There's No Place Like Home
People often say there's no place like home. What do they mean? Do they live in a quaint little town with lots of history? On a rural farm that has been in the family for generations? In a bustling metropolis among millions of people who all seem to be rushing someplace urgently important? Sometimes I wonder about what makes a place so special, that it would earn the sentiment of someone who says there's no place like home, and means it sincerely.
In my own case, I do there's no place like home, and I do mean it sincerely.
My home started life as a dilapidated, early 1970's mobile home. It had been lived in by another family for many years by the time we decided to take on the project of renovating, adding an addition plus a garage, and moving in. What started as a temporary shelter while we planned and built our dream home has become our place of residence for the past twelve and a half years (and counting).
We have shifted from the original plan of building an expensive, huge, extravagant dream house to being content with our "dumpy little house" as my husband has nicknamed it. Our three sons were homeschooled here. We had a small alpaca farm for eight years on our property. Our laying hens live in the back yard. Our "dumpy little house" has a gorgeous kitchen that will rival any "dream home" out there, thanks to the hard work of my husband and sons, and we have created a multitude of memories here that will last at least a lifetime.
As I write this first entry, my firstborn son is on his way to sign papers to lease his first apartment. I wish him all the best, and I will miss him dearly.
I've lived in the same community for nearly forty years, but in truth, I know very little about my town. Sure, I know some of the history, and some of the people. I've viewed some of the art and purchased items from our local Farmer's Market. I do get out once in awhile and visit with friends. And even though I don't do it very often, I really do love to travel and look forward to each trip I take.
Most of the time however, I hang out around the house with my family. For there really is no place like home!
