""Auld Reekie"" Edinburgh Castle by 6mirror

Edinburgh Castle Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 28 photos

Three fabulous days in Edinburgh, Scotland

Our family pilgrimmage to Scotland ended here, where we stayed in a hotel outside the castle walls. Local bus rides were required to get to where we wanted to explore on foot. Of course we did the Castle walking tour (the Palace of Holyroodhouse, however, was completely closed to the public due to the Royals-in-residence at the time!) and the Auld Reekie underground tour, but mostly we wandered around on our own inside and outside the castle walls.

Side streets and closes win the day!

What really captivated me was not so much the magnificent castle, palace, cathedral, museums, and monuments, all of which we experienced, but delighful surprises off the beaten path (i.e., off The Royal Mile). This close led to The Writer's Museum where we spent over an hour wandering through.

Another unexpected treat

And this chance sight, while meandering through courtyards between medieval buildings off the Royal Mile!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Go off season, far less crowds!
  • Cons:Next time, find lodging much closer to the Castle
  • In a nutshell:Elegant, yet with raw brutishness
