"Fukiya: Bengara-red is the colour" Fukiya by DutchW

Go there for the countryside and for the colour

Looking for a way to get out of major cities yet see something different from the average Japanese village? Then Fukiya is your destination. Thanks to red-ochre ores exploited here for centuries (called "bengara" since the pigment was first imported from Bengal) most of this village is coloured red: from orangy-red to burgundy-red. 'Most' includes the buildings, but also the wares in the local shops.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Village with very special (unique?!) looks
  • Cons:two hour's travel one-way by public transport
  • In a nutshell:See reds in shades and shapes
