"Avoid Sunrover at all costs!!" Fraser Island by Niall2008

Fraser Island Travel Guide: 166 reviews and 465 photos

I have been on numerous trips and tours throughout South America, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe, and I have to say that the worst tour I have ever been on in the 2 day 1 night Fraser Island tour with Sunover. The trip was overpriced, lacked any health and safety standards, and was an absolute disgrace. The entire group who went on the tour in fact complained, but as expected Sunrover failed to deal with the complaint, because in dealing with any complaint they would be displaying some degree of professionalism, which couldn't be further from the truth.
The Company can be best summarised by the 'expert' guide Eugene. We paid a premium for an 'expert' guide. However, Eugene was no 'expert', not in the island, not in Health and Safety, and from the smell and general appearance he presented, not in personal hygiene. Basically, Eugene had the manner and appearance of something better suited to a piggery rather than so called 'professional' tour. In fact, Eugene failed to take us to half the places, sent us off on our own to get lost, and was more interested in fishing and smoking than he was in providing us with the 'guided' tour we had paid for. In fact, on the last day he left us for three hours in the rain at Eli Creek, whilst he went for a 'sleep'. Apparently he needed to do so for health and safety reasons so that he was well rested for the journey back to Brisbane. The problem was that Eugene had not done anything over the trip that would have expended enough energy to merit additional sleep, apart from chain smoking and holding his fishing rod. The irony was that one of the greatest risks to our health and safety risk was posed by Eugene's sporadic and dangerous driving, particularly on the way to and from Brisbane, and of course all the health and safety issues emanating from Eugene's appearance, and the mushroom farm growing out of his toe nails... what a treat! Not only that but when we got out of the van to stretch our legs at a rest stop, the impatient Eugene almost reversed the van over us to hurry us up!
As it turned out Eugene actually went fishing during this rest period. We were informed of this as we stood, drenched on the beach. I have to say we were all secretly hoping that a tidal wave had swept him out to sea for two principal reasons 1. That he had singlehandedly ruined our trip, and 2. That if he had been swept out to sea that would have been the most contact he would have had with water, or anything resembling a wash for many years.
Then there was the facilities offered. The 4WD as in fact a 2WD. It was that dirty that it was only fit for shipping a flock of dead chicken to the local butchers, and the seats were that uncomfortable that we all lost feeling in our backsides for the duration of the trip. To add to this, the speedometer didn't work! Then there was the food we paid an additional $60 each for, and the facilities for preparing this food. Let me give you an idea of the standard of facilities offered. I have seen cleaner facilities at a sewer plant pre treatment of raw sewage. The food itself was far from the culinary treats we were lead to believe awaited us, unless you call cheap sausages and burgers any resembling good food. And then, to exacerbate the situation further, the food was prepared by a man with the personal hygiene standards of a wild heifer. Horrendous.
We attach photographs for your reference. Although no amount of photographs could do justice to the abominable standard of trip offered by Sunrover.
My advice is to pay a bit extra and go with much better companies such as trailblazers. Sunrover ruined the trip to Fraser Island, one of the most breathtaking parts of Australia for the entire group, and it is hoped that this review will deter others from even contemplating this trip.
