vysnaite's new Lithuania Page

by vysnaite - last update: May 4, 2004

Welcome to the country of honey, amber, nice language, long history, Baltic sea, blend of cultures, old traditions, modern people!

Recently it really became popular to tour the Baltics and the most often question I get is "I have little time, what are the must-sees?". So here's what I recommend if you have from 1 week to 14-15 days.

extended and my personal recommendable menu for ~14days:

Vilnius www.vilnius.lt capital with a very nice old town, discos and other stuff., Trakai (www.trakai.lt)- a beautiful castle on the island of the lake and Kernave with mounds and the river (Trakai and Kernave are both near, beautiful nature scenes on the way), Kaunas www.kaunas.lt (center, old town, Pazaislis Cloister at Kaunas Lagoon and a day in Rumsiskes open air museum with traditional ethnographical villages in summer you can go there by ferry too), Siauliai and Hill of Crosses, Palanga with amber museum and seaside for active rest (you can make also a half day trips to close small towns like Kretinga or Sventoji by minibus ~20 mins) from there to Klaipeda to see the old town and to take a ferry to Curorian Spit www.nerija.lt (it's a part between the sea and Kurshiu Lagoon, fantastic nature and places, high dunes lot's of relaxation, written into UNESCO's nature heritage there must sees are: Nida, Juodkrante). Most of these places you can find on my pages (palanga, trakai, siauliai -hill of crosses, kaunas).

percentually I'd leave more time to the Curorian Lagoon ~30/40 %. If you're by car and then you have to go to Latvia, from Palanga take direction of Liepaja and soon you are there.

Short standart tourist menu:

Vilnius-Trakai- Kaunas [not always]- hill of crosses- curorian spit
Trakai castle

(www.nerija.lt). Quasi tutti li trovate nelle mie pagine di Lituania (spec.Trakai, Palanga, Siauliai - hill of crosses, Kaunas).

Avendo pochi giorni giro standarte turistico sarebbe:

While in Lithuania from food you must try:

I oblige you to ;-)

black bread, curd cheese with natural lincquid honey, fresh strawberries from the local market, black baked bread with garlic and cold good lithuanian beer, saltibarksciai - cold beet soup, one of the following: kugelis/plokstainis, cepelinai/didzkukuliai, at the seaside - fresh smoked fish. In winter additional things: traditional "kopustiene" soup (cabbage soup) with hot potatoes, and traditional lithuanian mead "suktinis". Check the travelogue "traditional lithuanian food" for more detailed food information.
