Mequon Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 10 photos
Mequon, located on the western shores of Lake Michigan, is just twenty minutes north of downtown Milwaukee. The closeness to Milwaukee offers the best of both worlds—small town charm and the amenities of the big city. Covering nearly fifty square miles, Mequon boasts majestic lake bluffs, stately homes, lush farmland
and expansive open space.
Mequon was settled by the first German settlers in Wisconsin in 1839. They began to build cabins in the area and clear the land for farming. They shared the land with Pottawatomie and Menomonee tribes in the area.
Today about 26,000 people call Mequon home. The Mequon-Thiensville School District is ranked one of the finest in the state. Mequon also offers post secondary educational opportunities at Concordia University and Milwaukee Area Technical College - North Campus. The Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary is also located in the community. St. Mary's Hospital-Ozaukee, a new state-of-the-art facility , is the only hospital in Ozaukee County.
Residentially suburban in character, Mequon has made a commitment to preserve its rural heritage. The result is an appealing mixture of wide open country charm and urban
convenience and sophistication.
Outstanding shopping opportunities are available including shopping malls, numerous specialty shops and antique stores. The area is home to many orchards and produce farms.
Mequon offers some of the finest golf in the area with its three country clubs, one public course and several private enterprises. The community boasts fifteen scenic parks, including nature preserves and parks with recreational facilities.
The new Rotary Park is the site of the annual "Gathering on the Green", a July outdoor performance of the Milwaukee Symphony and the Milwaukee Ballet. This event draws thousands to this day-long event for the family. Pommern Tag, an outdoor German festival, takes place on the last weekend of June in Mequon City Park and features ethnic food, displays, entertainment and cultural events.
- Pros:Safe, upscale, peaceful, convenient
- Cons:A bit pretentious
- In a nutshell:A beautiful, peaceful city set along the coast of Lake Michigan
