Madrid and Barcelona might be the two largest cities in Spain, but Sevilla is big in its own right. Sevilla was known as the gate way to the New World and boomed when Spain did. Explorers such as Amerigo Vespucci and Magellan sailed from its great river harbor, and local artists such as Velazquez, Murillo, and Zurbaran made it a cultural center. Sevilla’s Golden Age, with its New World riches, ended when the harbor silted up and the Spanish Empire crumbled. |
