When it comes to art in Italy, in Europe or even the world one of the greatest cities has to be Florence. From the Uffizi Gallery to the Accademia Florence is filled to the rafters with the best Renaissance art anywhere. Of course, Michelangelo’s David is the best-known sculpture in the world, but don’t miss out on the less trafficked David by Donatello, at the Museo Nazionale (Bargello). Most of the historic center lies North of the Arno River, but don’t miss the views from the south side of the river. Everything is walkable with much located between the Cathedral and the Ponte Vecchio (old bridge). The Via Calz is a pedestrian-only street that connects the Cathedral with the Piazza della Signoria (central square), Palazzo Vecchio (city palace), and the Uffizi Gallery. |
