Christians escaping the barbarian invasions first inhabited Venice in the 5th century. The people were forced to take refuge on the thousands of little islands which face out to the Adriatic. From these early days rose a trade centre that meant enormous riches for the city. Venice has kept its historic charm in tact due to its inaccessibility to the automobile. Visitors arriving by car have to park at one end of Venice’s Grand Canal (the mainwater way) and take a boat or walk into the city. The lack of car engines and horns only add to the experience of Venice. Taking a nightly walk can be very relaxing with the only sound being the water in the canals and the singing Gondoliers. Everything in the city is reachable by foot or boat. Enjoy getting lost in the maze of streets. Ask locals for directions and you might be surprised you are closer to your destination than you thought. |
