Garmisch-Partenkirchen is quickly becoming one of our favorite places to visit. It makes for a wonderful weekend or you could easily use this as a home-base for a week-long stay (something we plan to do in the future). There is so much so do in this area no matter what the season. And you cannot beat the views! Surrounded by mountains, it is breathtaking each time you look up.
I asked several times while I was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen when the best time to come is -- and each time I was told September to mid-October because the weather is the best and you have lots of clear, sunny days. Thankfully, I was there at just that time and they told the truth - it was fantastic weather!
We like to go hiking and enjoy good meals - we walked through the Partnach Gorge and continued on UP the other side (not for the faint of heart!). I'm not much of a shopper but we did do some shopping, and we went to the top of the Zugspitze. We also visited nearby Mittenwald, which I highly recommend for a change of pace - same wonderful views and an equally wonderful town.
Garmisch is also a great central location for visiting King Ludwig II of Bavaria's three castles - Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, and Hohenschwangau. You can see from the beauty of this area why the king selected these mountains to build his homes.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a definite must-see on your bucket list.
- Pros:You can't beat the views and things to do!
- Cons:Lots of tourists so it can get crowded
- In a nutshell:Stunning!

Have you visited Frauendorfer Gasthaus yet? A friend was there recently and she told me about warm beer liqueur they had there :-) Thought immediately of you and your hubby!
Hi Brenda, a fantastic page on Garmisch-Partenkirchen - I really enjoyed your writing and the wonderful photos. Lake Eibsee looks absolutely beautiful, and your account of Zugspitze was very interesting.
Oh, lots of ideas to follow! The Klamms, Partnachklamm & Leutaschklamm are high on my wishlist for my next time in this part of Bavaria. The old Church with these marvellous old frescoes looks fantastic! Very unusual somehow. And i really must go up to Zugspitze!
Oh my, during our recent trip to Murnau, we saw the Griesbräu, but ... we opted to eat at home (my sister is an excellent cook). Next time you are there look for Café Krönner. So delicious cakes and they have cafés in Garmisch, Murnau and Oberammergau.
