Bruges was a town that we visited as part of my northern Renaissance art history course. We came for the art and left with a feeling that one day I would return to this beautifully maintained medieval city full of canals and cobbled streets. It captured my fascination from the very beginning as we meandered along the Minnewater full of swans and into town. I enjoyed the funky artistic statues and the true art treasures within the town, including one of the few Michelangelo sculptures to come out of Italy. The architecture was beautiful and I can see why Bruges was named a European City of Culture in 2002.
For our day in Bruges, our class had a full agenda which included a stop at the Markt and its Belfort and the Burg, a visit to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Welcome Church of Our Lady, the Hans Memling Museum located in the St. John's Hospital, St-Salvator Cathedral, and the Groeninge Museum. Our emphasis was on Renaissance artists and architecture and Bruges had lots of both!
We took the train into Bruges from Brussels and walked from the train station to Minnewater. The train station was full of school children who were grabbing snacks at the station’s shops. We chatted with a couple of them and they said they did this every morning and then came back at lunch time for more! Many took the train into town and some had their bikes and you could see the various uniforms of the schools. After picking up our own snack, we headed off for our class – the study of Bruges.
After we returned home, we watched the movie In Bruges, which is a dark comedy set in the town. It was fun to look back and see the places we had visited, to be able to say “I saw that!” and “I was there!” And now I hope you will enjoy virtually touring Bruges with me as I reminisce about my time in this wonderful Belgian city.

Thanks for sharing your time in Brugges with me. Like you, I was enchanted by the city and would love to return.
Dee~ Thanks so much for visiting Brugges with me! It is a beautiful city - I do hope to return there and see the things I missed the first time around. And your profile picture makes my smile every time I see it! How festive! Thanks, again. ~Brenda
I'm happy it puts a smile on your face, I hope it makes a lot of people smile!
Hi Brenda, I see you had a great excursion to Brugge as part of your northern Renaissance art history course. I had a brief visit to Brugge last August. My agenda was to follow in the footsteps of the protagonist of the novel Bruges-la-Morte (plus one of the small footsteps of Jacques Brel’s Marieke), so I missed a lot of the things that you saw – all the more reason to return.
I’m looking forward to seeing you and Tom again next Saturday at the Glühwein meeting in Karlsruhe.
Hi Don~ Thanks for visiting my Brugge pages. What a neat idea to tour based on a book! I would like to do something similar, but in England. One of my favorite authors does small private tours based on her historical novels of the Plantagenet era and maybe one day I'll save enough pennies to go on one :-)
I would like to get back to Brugge to see the things we didn't see; it was a whirlwind with the course and very specific sites were visited. Tom and I just returned from nine days in Malta and Sicily; I wish I had brought back the sun and warmth as souvenirs! See you tomorrow in Karlsruhe (we'll be meeting everyone for the dinner portion but will not be there for the Speyer part). ~Brenda
Beautiful page about one of my favorite destinations! Thank you for sharing and the amazing panorama picture of the Begijnhof.
Thanks so much for visiting my Brugge pages! It is such a marvelous place; I really wish I had been able to spend more time there. I guess that's a good reason for a return trip :-) Thanks again! ~Brenda
