We waited to visit Schwetzingen until it was a beautiful spring weekend because we wanted to see the extensive gardens – and a wintry day or otherwise bad weather day just wouldn’t do. And it was worth the wait!
Schwetzingen is a small town situated between Mannheim and Heidelberg that seems to be dominated by the Schwetzingen Schloss, a former hunting lodge turned royal palace that contains both French and English styles as well as wonderful statues, an aviary, temples and various other buildings. One could walk through the gardens all day and always see something new.
Our day at Schwetzingen consisted of wandering the gardens, taking a tour of the palace interior, and having dinner at the local brewery just outside the front gate. The weather was magnificent – optimum temperature, sunny with blue skies and white fluffy clouds, and not too many people to make it feel crowded.
The gardens were green and appeared to have just been planted with summer flowers, the fountains were all working, and the interesting birds around the grounds were delighting people by just being out where we could see them. At the brewery, the service was incredibly friendly and the food was absolutely delicious as we sat outside under the umbrellas and enjoyed the fresh air while watching the people go by. To sum it up, it was a perfect day!

Oh lovely!! Only realised yesterday that you have written about Schwertingen already :-) What a picture perfect day, what perfect photos you have!! Try and come next time when it is cherry and apple blossom time. The orchards opposite of the mosque look gorgeous during that time, especially since they used to plant tulips and daffodils onto the grass patches between the trees - an amazing and marvellous colour explosion :-)
Thanks, Ingrid, for looking at Schwetzingen! Yes, it was an absolutely gorgeous day full of blue skies and warm weather :-) I loved all the statues/fountains throughout the gardens. It would be great to go again since I think I could walk the gardens all day, or perhaps bring a book and pick a quiet spot somewhere and read. Not too far away - perhaps in the spring we should go together for a revisit?
It was also interesting to see how this new VT comment feature works for comments on tips -- I loved being able to read your comments about my specific tips! So helpful!
