It’s maybe because of flowers that I’ve become a painter. ~ Claude Monet
Giverny was Claude Monet’s home and inspiration for his wonderful impressionist paintings. It is about 50 miles west of Paris and a must-see for an art lover or garden lover. The gardens are divided into two – the water garden and the gardens beside the long pink house – both well worth visiting when in full bloom. Monet’s famous water lily paintings were inspired by the light off the lilies and the water in the pond. If you are familiar with Monet’s work, you will recognize the green Japanese bridge from his paintings.
Monet was an impressionist artist whose work “Impression: Sunrise” inspired the term impressionist back when it was frowned upon (the term was supposed to be derogatory). Thanks to Monet and the other artists of his time, we have a completely new and different way to look at the world.
We visited Giverny in late May and the flowers were starting to bloom; the rose and white water lilies were beginning to come out across the pond. It was not as crowded as later in the summer and not so hot as well. Basically, the day was perfect.
As someone who loves photography, I enjoyed the opportunities to take pictures of the many varieties of plants, the house, and the bridges across the pond. I am posting some of my favorite photos with my tips and as a travelogue to share with you.
Giverny was on my top ten list of sights visited in 2011 - my official list is on my travel blog at Wanderings. Here's a reprint of Giverny - my #5 spot:
Half-way through the countdown list, we are now at #5 of my top travel visits for 2011.
And this one was absolutely breathtaking – the gardens that inspired Claude Monet to paint those wonderful impressionist paintings of water lilies and Japanese bridges.
We stopped in Giverny on our way from Paris to Normandy and spent a couple hours at the home Monet lived at for forty plus years. He created the garden next to the house and the water gardens across the road and set out to immortalize them in his work. Even as his eyes failed him, he continued to paint the water lilies that have become so famous.
We went at the end of May – perfect timing because the flowers were all blooming. There were white and pink lilies floating in the water as we walked around a pathway that leads past bamboo, tiger lilies, and green bridges. All over the pond were the lilies, quietly lying in the afternoon sun just waiting to be painted. And that would happen shortly because as we were leaving and the gardens were closing, there were painting groups coming in and setting up their easels to take advantage of the lighting at dusk without the crowds of people walking by them.
Monet’s house was a large house (after all, he and his wife raised eight children in there!) that was covered with ivy. We toured the inside and got a feel for the man behind the art. There were lots of bright colors in the house – yellow seemed to be the predominant color I saw. And from the upstairs bedroom window, we were afforded a spectacular view of the garden.
I took lots of photos, but somehow they just don’t compare to his paintings. But they add to my memories of Giverny, France, and the gardens of Monet.
- Pros:beautifully colorful gardens, the water lilies
- Cons:can get crowded in summer
