"weekend in Alsfeld" Alsfeld by brendareed

Alsfeld Travel Guide: 45 reviews and 151 photos

Hubby and I recently discovered the “Fairy Tale Road” (Deutsches Märchenstrasse) that runs through central and northern Germany – a unique travel route that covers the territory of the Brothers Grimm and on the spot locations of some of their best known children’s stories. It begins in Hanau (near Frankfurt) and rambles through many towns, ending up above Bremen. Because the route is more than 200 km long, we are doing visiting some of the closer towns during our weekends.

And so today’s journey brought us to Alsfeld – home of Little Red Riding Hood!

The town of Alsfeld enjoys its fairy tale linkage and the ever-so-friendly Tourist Information Center was so very helpful and showed us a doll of Little Red Riding Hood that reverses to the wolf.

But the town of Alsfeld is also known for having some of the best half-timbered buildings in Germany with more than 400 of these structures in the town. The self-guided walking tour of the town takes visitors to more than 30 of these half-timbered buildings as well as the magnificent half-timbered Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in the market square.

Alsfeld has a number of festival days throughout the year and a Fairy Tale Christmas market in December. I have marked my calendar to return for the Christmas market, which I think will be great fun and a twist on the average German Weihnachtsmarkt themes.

Hubby and I arrived in Alsfeld, parked, and headed to the Tourist Information Center. We had already downloaded the walking tour brochure (available in German and English) from the Alsfeld TI website. The weather was a bit iffy at the time – and would later turn to rain – but it didn’t deter us from our mission: to see the fairy tale town of Alsfeld and its half-timbered buildings.

If you would like to join Hubby and I on the tour in the order we went as we followed the walking tour, please click here to begin as we arrive in Alsfeld and my links on each page will take you along our path. I tried to get photos of all the things on the tour, but once the rain started, I missed a couple of them.

Alsfeld certainly has restored and preserved its historic half-timbered buildings in a big way. This no doubt happened in the twentieth century in a phase when energy was cheap. In the 21st century heating costs have gone up so much that the problem arises of how to insulate these houses. If you put insulation on the outside (for instance slate shingles such as you noticed) you again conceal the half-timbered structure, but it you put the insulation on the inside you make the rooms even smaller than they already are. My advice about half-timbered houses is to enjoy looking at them, but don't buy one.

Thanks, Don, for all your nice comments and ratings on my Alsfeld page! The half-timbered houses are beautiful but definitely not something I'd be interested in purchasing. We used to own a 100 year old farmhouse and that was quite enough work on the upkeep and heating - always interesting are all the little surprises that you find when trying to do repairs :-) ~Brenda

    A fairytale location indeed!
It strikes me that if we were to visit, we could flesh out the fairytale by bringing our own Wolf with us - who is getting bigger by the day and, onm occasion, can be very bad indeed!
Such a pleasure as always to read your accounts and enjoy your wonderful photos!
Happy New Year to you, Tom and the family (including the most perfect grandson in the world)!

Hi Cathy! Thanks for stopping by Alsfeld! It was a cute town; the only thing better would've been no rain. I am sure your Wolf is enjoying being a typical young boy that just delights in prematurely graying his mum's hair ;-)
Thanks for the good wishes on 2013 - we plan to have a great year - and my adorable grandson will become a big brother this year (unfortunately during Sibiu so I've pre-empted my EuroMeet plans to head to the States in June).
Hoping you, Markus, and the kids have a travel-packed, fun-filled 2013!

Oh what a marvellous little town this is, although I felt sad that you had so much rain during your visit! I loved the parking sign with the Euro coins, never saw that before :-) And their tourist board seems to have learned the lessons - signs and plaques in English! Oh, so you also look for the old measuring signs! Next time when you are in Heidelberg, look for the Pretzel sign at the major church. Christine once pointed it out to me. Interesting story about this Dr. Kober and also the founder of Birkenstock shoes. I wonder where in the history they have lost the "c" of the inventor's original name. I love that little Platz where Gänseliesel statue stands :-))
Wonderful Sunday morning read, dear Brenda :-))

Thank you Brenda for the great idea to visit this city out of Deutsches Märchenstrasse that I missed still when explored this part of Germany. Beautiful half-timbered houses from Fairy tales!
