"weekends in Hessen" Land Hessen by brendareed

The German state of Hesse, stretching from Kassel in the north to Heppenheim in the south, Wiesbaden in the west to Fulda in the east, is where I currently call home. It contains Germany’s fifth largest city, Frankfurt, as well as one of the busiest international airports in the world. The River Main cuts east-west through the center of the state and the River Rhein creates the western border. There is a lot of history in this area – from the Roman era to modern history. Small half-timbered houses dot the landscape as well as modern skyscrapers built after WWII in Frankfurt. The Fairy Tale Trail begins just northeast of Frankfurt and heads north. So much to see and so little time to see it!

Because Hesse is local for me, I have been visiting the sights a day at a time, typically selecting a town to visit in connection with a hike and a meal at a local restaurant. I hope that these pages will be my personal ideas of the best Hesse has to offer travelers and those living in the region alike. Oftentimes, it is easy to overlook the local things because you know they will be there and you can visit anytime. As we have witnessed from friends, sometimes that time to visit these places never seems to get there and then we’ve missed our opportunities. I hope that when my time to leave Germany gets here, I will have seen just about everything on my list, both large attractions and the smaller lesser known places. So much to see and so little time in which to see it…but I’m trying my best to see as much as I can!
