I live in Bilbao.
Bilbao is not a worldwide known city. Until the 80's, it was a rich and heavily industrial city and port. After an enormous crisis, many industries were closed down and unemployment boomed. In the 90's, the city started a profound reconversion, that reached it's highest peak with the construction of the Metro Bilbao (subway) and the Guggenheim Museum.
The old, ugly, polluted city is turning young, clean, and colorful!
Besides the Guggenheim Museum, there's a lot more to visit. In the undisputed first place is the GASTRONOMY. I've had people in my company make up the strangest excuses just to be able to travel to our site in Bilbao and have dinner in town! (Ya'll know multinationals...) The basque cuisine is somewhere between the Spanish and the French. Excellent prime materials (especially fish) cooked with French delicacy.
In the second place, you have Bilbao's architecture. Just walking around the city is an increasing pleasure, now that traffic is being reduced, and walk-only avenues are being created.
In the third place, the whole province of Vizcaya (Bizkaia in Basque). Green, hilly, with sandy beaches... As an example, the beach of
