It was an interesting time for my first visit to Paris. LePen, France's fascist candidate for president, stood a good chance of winning. So much so that the third party candidate dropped out of the race just so LePen would not win. Holland's own similarly backgrounded president-elect was recently assasinated, so the area I was in was practically a military zone. A bunch of military personell with machine guns nearly ran me over in the subway, which was quite a shock. Though my initial impression of Paris was of a dirty, seedy, racist city overrun with tourists; It did seem to grow on me as time progressed.
