South-east Sicily

Ispica is a town situated on a hill 170 meters above sea level not far from Modica, Sicily. It has a baroque area and a medieval area. The importance of the city is still linked to the important archeological findings.
The Cava di Ispica (Quarry) is a 13 km long valley. Besides being rich in a varied Mediterranean flora, has troglodyte settlements, shrines and cemeteries. The caves are of the most varied forms, consisting of large cracks and natural burial caves carved out of the perpendicular walls most of them are inaccessible.
Ispica is only 6 Km away from the lovely beach and sea resort of Pozzallo.

The surrounding countryside all around the Modica area is quite unique: here you can find the characteristic dry stone walls and olive and carob trees.
The surrounding countryside is also characterized by the "Masserie" or the typical farms, run in ancient times by the local families. The Masserie represent a typical element of the local landscape, both for their historical role, tied to the period of land ownership, which give a significant element of architecture and transformation of the territory.
It is the place where local traditions are passed down to subsequent generations and the environment has always been dedicated to food production and to domestic life.
The outdoor life on a farm was held in the courtyard at the front, wide and paved with limestone, “il baglio” surrounded by several blocks. This area was the play space for children, but also the passage that led to the stables after grazing animals, and the meeting place of the peasant families who were returning from the fields.
