"Switzerland capital - Bern" Bern by Ilney

Bern was founded in 1191 in a peninsula , to have its three sides naturally protected. The clock tower was its first gate. This will give us the idea of how small it was. In the 14th century the city expanded to where today is the train station. by the middle Ages, Bern was considered as the largest and most powerful city state north of the alps. In 1405 Bern was burned to the ground , but immediately reconstructed in sandstone.
It practely has not changed sinse then and for that it was awarded World Heritage status by the UNESCO in 1983.
It became the capital city in 1848.

Aare River

Entering into the old town through the Tower gate, at the end we find a bridge over Aare river. The color of the water is a intense light green and very , very clean.
Close to the bridge the four Pyrenean brown bears can bee seeing. Why do they have the bears? According to the legend, the first animal to be killed by the city's founder was a bear, so he named the city Bern ( bear).
