Richmond, Kentucky, was my home during my college years. I attended Eastern Kentucky University, and lived both on campus and off. Richmond is a mid-sized town -- a meeting place for big city lovers and small town homebodies. The people (true to Kentucky style) are friendly, there are enough restaraunts to keep things interesting, the countryside is beautiful, and aside from someone stealing my license plate once, I didn't have any brushes with crime. Most neighborhoods are extremely safe.

Lake Reba, Richmond, Kentucky

Richmond is lacking in tourist attractions. Its locals enjoy it for what it is: a quiet, peaceful city whose economy thrives on the university's students and faculty. However, there is one definite "place to go" in everyone's mind: Lake Reba Park.

Lake Reba features sports grounds, playgrounds, open fields, plenty of gazebos for grilling, a golf course, a water park, and the lake for which it is named. On Independence Day it hosts large crowds for a fireworks show over the water.

• Pros:Clean, quiet, safe community. Small town feel, but conveniently close to Lexington.
• Cons:There isnt' much excitement for tourists.
