  • The Old North Bridge. This strategic bridge was the site of a major Revolutionary War battle in 1775 which was the first American victory. British regulars marched from Boston to seize an arsenal hidden somewhere in Concord and smashed their first resistance on Lexington Green. Continuing through Concord, they met the rebel force at the bridge and were defeated, hastily retreating to Boston afterwards. The current bridge is a reconstruction from the 1960s, the original bridge having collapsed long ago. On the grounds are the Old Manse, a beautiful old farmhouse, as well as a museum detailing the battles in the area. There are also canoe and kayak rentals to ply the Concord River.

Directions: The Old North Bridge is located just off Monument Street. Take Monument Street north out of Concord center and park on the right side of the street, right before the road bridge.

Things To Do: Go to Walden Pond. This...

  • Go to Walden Pond. This tranquil pool of water is where Henry David Thoreau escaped from the bustle of Concord Centre in the 1840s and built a small shack to live and write in. Famous for the novel Walden, the pond now draws many. Beware, the parking there is extortion, and there's no way around it, since it's a bit of a hike to the pond from the centre of town. They don't allow pets either. Nevertheless, in the summer you can swim in its crystal waters and in the fall admire the dazzling foliage. This is probably the number one tourist spot in Concord, but it remains surprisingly quiet and is a great place to relax and reflect. It's on Walden Street south of Route 2.

I stayed at the Colonial Inn last July--very nice rooms (small but with old-world charm), and the restaurant was great. Good early-dinner prices, too.

The Battle of Lexington and Concord was not a "Turning point" in the revolutionary war. It was the start of it. How could you visit Concord and post without getting that straight?

Walden Pond has always been one of my favorite getaway spots.
