In recent years San Francisco has become somewhat of a haven for the less fortunate individuals of society who are unfortunately without homes. Some consider the city's liberal reputation at fault although successive Republican mayoral administrations have been quite harsh on the transient population, while others blame the climate, though it's far rom balmy even in August and especially not at night. Still, their presence is a factor which may be shocking to those coming from less urban locales. If the homeless are especially bothersome to you, avoid the area around 6th and Market and the Civic Center, where they're apt to camp out at night. Also be aware many feign Vietnam Veteran status to elicit sympathy (though some may be authentic). As a general rule, I decline to make a donation unless some performance, musical or otherwise, is involved. Hopefully funds given to charities will reach the others constructively.

Visitors gazing at palm trees in photo albums of San Francisco may be surprised to learn that it is far from a subtropical paradise. Contrariwise, it can become quite cold and views well-obscured by a dense fog which rolls in during the late afternoon and lifts by morning, though it tends to linger closer to the ocean and on the Bay itself. Certain neighbourhoods, mostly on the city's east side, are more prone to sunshine than others. The Sunset in particular seems to be perennially fogged-in. Don't expect uninterrupted vistas or perfect, cloudless days to necessarily await your trip to San Francisco.
