Burkina Faso, literally the "land of the justs", is on the border between Sahel and the (former) tropical forest of the Guinea gulf. The process of desertification claimed new areas in the latest years, as the sand advanced, based on the climatic change and the overgrazing of the poor grass. Burkina Faso has no harbour, its main link with the ocean is the railway running from Ouagadougou to Abidjan (Ivory Coast), via Bobo Dioulasso (the forested southern area of Burkina). Of course, it is one among the poorest countries in the World, its economy is strictly connected to the French one (though the link used to be even stronger until the CFA was granted a fixed - and unfair - rate of exchange with the French Franc). |
