Beautiful island with an active volcano

On the way to Komodo you pass the beautiful island of Sangeang with its active volcano, Gunung Api.

Api consists of two cones called Doro Api (1949 m) which is the active cone, and Doro Mantoi (1795 m). The last eruptions have taken place from 1985-1988, in 1999, white plumes have been emitted.

Sangeang is close to the big island of Sumbawa; both islands belong to the group of the "Lesser Sunda Islands".

Here you can see the grey and black lava fields from the most recent eruptions of Api. Most of the Lesser Sunda islands have volcanic origin; some volcanoes are still active.
