REPUBLIC OF THE SOUTHERN KOREAN PENINSULA, chiefly south of the 38th parallel. It is bounded by North Korea on the north and borders the East China Sea (south), the Yellow Sea (west) and the Sea of Japan (east).
The long history of the Korean people has been marked by the influence of China, since the 19th century, of Japan and of the Western powers.
