Rhodes is the biggest island of the Dodecanese. It lies at the south-eastern side of the Aegean sea, opposite the Minor Asia coast, about 11 miles away. It has a surface of 1398 square kilometres. The city of Rhodes is the capital of the Dodecanese Prefecture.Dodecanese means twelve islands. |

About the city of Rodos According to mythology,the island was named after Rodos, the wife of Sun.
The city of Rodos was built by Ippodamos in 408 B.C.
During the 4th century the island knew a big intellectual,aconomical and artistical development and a sample of that period is the famous Kolossos. In the city of Rodos, buildings like the City Hall, the Port Authority, the Prefecture, the Bank of Greece, the National Theatre, the New Market and the Hotel of Roses (housing the Casino) were constructed by the Italians (1912-1945).
