About the island

Rhodes is the biggest island of the Dodecanese. It lies at the south-eastern side of the Aegean sea, opposite the Minor Asia coast, about 11 miles away. It has a surface of 1398 square kilometres. The city of Rhodes is the capital of the Dodecanese Prefecture.Dodecanese means twelve islands.

-Attavyros
-Southern Rhodes
-Afandou
-Archangelos
-Lindos
According to the census of 1991 around 100.000 people live on the island, the majority of them in the city of Rodos.The population of the city of Rodos must be over 60.000 inhabitants.

About the city of Rodos

According to mythology,the island was named after Rodos, the wife of Sun.
The city of Rodos was built by Ippodamos in 408 B.C.
During the 4th century the island knew a big intellectual,aconomical and artistical development and a sample of that period is the famous Kolossos.
In the city of Rodos, buildings like the City Hall, the Port Authority, the Prefecture, the Bank of Greece, the National Theatre, the New Market and the Hotel of Roses (housing the Casino) were constructed by the Italians (1912-1945).
