Ermoupolis the capital of the island of Syros as well as of the Cyclades islands. It was created in 1821 from the refugees who came to sland from Minor Asia and the silands of Chios, Kassos, Psara and Crete. It's been years since I had last visited Syros, I was a child indeed. Consequently, I had a very vague picture of the island in my mind. My latest visit to Syros and Ermoupoli was on the 1st of May 2003. |
| | The name of Ermoupolis was given as a tribute to the god Ermes who was the god of trade. In 1823 was created the 1st hospital in Greece. In 1833, Ermoupoli, becomes the capital of the island and was created the First Gymnasium in Greece from Neofytos Vamvas and it is the same school that Eleftherios Venizelos will study later. In Syros was made the first hellenic steamship in 1854. |
| | We travelled from Pireas to Syros with the dolphin Highspeed II. Once arrived there, we went to have a coffee to a coffee shop by the port. There was expecting us a surprise. One friend of the company, had already arranged with the owner of the coffee shop to be ready our table (we were a big group of friends, about 25 persons). As soon as we arrived there, the table was full of cakes and sweet rolls, made by the girl of the shop and we had only to order our coffee.Visit also these pages: Ano Syra
