The baths of Kallithea

The today's Municipality of Kallithea consists of the former Communities of Kalythies, Koskinou and Psinthos.
The name of Kallithea was given by the Italians who changed the name of Kalythies into the name of Kallithea.
During the Italian occupation, the spas of Kallithea were famous not only in Italy but also in Hellas and in Middle East.
Before the Italians made the infrastucture for the transportation to the spas, the people used to reach the spas by small boats from the sea or by pack-animals.
The road to Kallithea was constructed in 1926.
In 1932 the Italian Administration organized the spas by providing doctors, nurses and accomodation for the visitors.
After the liberation, the spas were abandoned.

Construction of the spas.
-the main entrance with the circular square and the fountain
-the semi-circular atrium for the distribution of water
-the complex of the sanitary establishment.

Al the above parts are connected with gardens, places to have a rest and paved paths.
The baths were constructed under the orders of the Italian administrator Mario Lago and the architect was Pietro Lombardi.
The were inaugurated in 1929 after the completion of the road.
The upper atrium was added in 1930.
The architecture of the baths is a combination of all the different architectural styles (byzantine, roman, arabic, doric, architecture of the island and of the Knight's period) that Rodos went through.
