SYROS

by Christianne - last update: Mar 19, 2005

Syros is the capital of Cyclades. It is 83 nautical miles from Pireas and a surface of 86 square km.
Whatever a tourist needs will find on this island.
Quiet and cosmopolitan beaches. Narrow and mazy tracks in Ano Syra, as well as imposing streets made of marble and granit in Ermoupoli.
Traditional white houses and majestic mansions.
Orthodox and Catholic churches.
Small coffee shops and bars with crowds of people.
Ano Syra
There are 3 Municipalities on the island:
1) The Municipality of Ermoupoli which derived from the merge fo the Municipality of Ermoupoli and of the Community Mana according to the programme Ioannis Kapodistrias of 1997.
2) The Municipality of Ano Syros (Ano Syra) which derived from the merge of the Municipality of Ano Syra and of the Communities Galissas Pagos and and Chroussa.
3) The Municipality of Poseidonia which derived from the merge of the Communities of Poseidonia (Della Grazia), Foinika and Bari.
Ermoupoli
First time I visited Syros when I was a little child. I had therefore very few things to remember from the island, till the day that some friends suggested on our going to the island on a one-day excursion. I agreed without any doubt.
It was really amazing. At the end ofthe day, on our coming back, we were tired but full of beautiful impressions.

The name Syros derives from the name Sour or Osoura wich means rocky.
The first archeological finds in Chalandriani, in the north-eastern part of the sand date back to the 2nd period of the 1st Cycladic Civilisation. Most of them they are placed ,nowadays, in the Archeological Museum of Athens, In the Cycladic Museum Goulandris and in the Archeological Museum of Syros.
