THESSALONIKI, THE CITY I WAS BORN

by Christianne - last update: Oct 5, 2006

Thessaloniki is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded over 300 years B.C by Cassander, King of Macedonia, and was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great.
Situated on the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf, it is an important commercial port.

The White Tower once surrounding the medieval city. Constructed in the 15th century, the tower served as a defensive bulwark, a prison, a place of execution, and now you can see there, a wonderful collection of sculptures, frescoes, and other interesting works of art from 300 to 1400 AD related to the history and culture of the city. The White Tower is the city's most famous landmark.

After the fire of 1918 the church was restored with the purpose to preserve the details of the original. The church was built on the ruins of a Roman bath. Beneath the church is the crypt of Aghios Demetrios.

Rotonda

Rotonda was built in 306 AD as the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Galerius. Later on, became a church dedicated to St. George and mosaics of the 4th century were added. After serving as a mosque for the Ottomans, the Rotunda nowadays houses Christian art.

I can't tell you how many times I have visited Thessaloniki. It is the city I was born (although I have lived all my life in Athens), I have a house and family there and I visit it many times per year.
