|  | Points of interestThessaloniki's attractions White Tower Nikis Avenue, Thessaloniki The White Tower once surrounding the medieval city. Constructed in the 15th century, the tower served as a defensive bulwark, a prison, a place of execution, and now you can see there, a wonderful collection of sculptures, frescoes, and other interesting works of art from 300 to 1400 AD related to the history and culture of the city. The White Tower is the city's most famous landmark.
Aghia Sofia Pavlou Mela Street, Aghia Sofia Square Built in the 8th century, Aghia Sofia is a beautiful Christian church modeled on the church of Aghia Sofia in Istanbul. The church contains amazing mosaics and wall paintings including a mosaic of The Ascension.
Aghios Dimitrios Church Aghiou Dimitriou and Aghiou Nikolaou at Egnatias Street After the fire of 1918 the church was restored with the purpose to preserve the details of the original. The church was built on the ruins of a Roman bath. Beneath the church is the crypt of Aghios Demetrios.
Rotonda Dimitriou Gounari Street Rotonda was built in 306 AD as the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Galerius. Later on, became a church dedicated to St. George and mosaics of the 4th century were added. After serving as a mosque for the Ottomans, the Rotunda nowadays houses Christian art.
Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki Hanth Square 6, M. Andronikou Street Collection of works of art from the Neolithic period and sculptures from the Archaic to the Late Roman period.
Byzantine Museum 2 Stratou Avenue Contains the finest collection of Byzantine art in Greece. Treasures such as icons, frescoes, mosaics, pottery, jewellery and manuscripts. |
