Situated on an island on the St Lawrence Seaway with a mountain(Mont Real) in the middle , Montreal suffers from an embarassment of topographical riches. Its a short hop from the rapids of the St Lawrence to the peak of Mount Real with plenty of charm and verve inbetween. In the 460 years since Jacques Cartier first sighted it, Montreal has grown to a city of 1 million mainly French speaking , largely Catholic people with all the amenities and genteel culture of a large city in France. In fact, Montreal is the 2nd largest French speaking city in the world.
Though 1,600 miles inland and at the base of a mountain, Montreal is actually one of Canadas great seaports! With dozens of 50 story skyscrapers , a huge Old French Quarter , remenants of both Expo 67 and the Olympic games of 1976 as well as 4 universities of note along with 2,000 French restaraunts and even more pastry shops.....Montreal has a dizzying array of great things to see and do.
But perhaps its most distinctive feature is the intricate labyrinth of subways , shops , restaraunts, cafes and underground walkways that connect the office buildings and stores that line Montreals streets. Known as Place Bonaventure , this subteranean catacomb allows for complete protection against Quebecs severe winters and is literally a city within a city. It all conspires to make Montreal one of the most interesting cities in North America.
NOTE* I grew up loving Canada and have many fond memories. It was a bone fide foreign country just 90mi away from my doorstep and is a country whose values I respect and considered moving to many times. If only the weather was better............. |
