The Golden Triangle(Tavares/Eustis/Mt Dora

by Michael_D - last update: Nov 22, 2006

Welcome to Tavares in The Golden Triangle

Tavares Florida is the Lake County seat..a sleepy old Florida type town with oaks and hanging Spanish moss, little ol country stores and people that say "Shoot doan make me no never mind!" instead of "no problem dude."

The City of Tavares was founded in 1880 by Major St.Claire Abrams in hopes that it would be the capital of Florida. Instead it became the county seat of Lake County in 1887.

There is a new City Hall, with an historical museum , a new county jail and many new parks. O'Keefes Irish Pub is also still there;-)

Gone is the huge orange packing plant on the edge of the lake. Citrus packing plants are about as old and rare as dinosaur bones these days. Recently it was razed and a new Lake Restaurant/shopping complex is being started..very upscale indeed.

The above picture is of Tavares High School. I didnt go there. Its just a pic indicative of the towns ambiance. This school was built in 1927 with a Spanish style, with stucco and a red tile roof. It originally had 12 classrooms, an auditorium, library, cafeteria, an administrative suite, and a gymnasium. Today it has been totally rebuilt and houses about 1,000 students and an undefeated football team.
THIS IS a picture of Union Congregational Church - 302 N. St. Clair Abrams Avenue

This church was founded in 1885 by W.W. Winchester of Mount Dora. It housed both Methodist and Baptist congregations until the early 1900s.
