BERN was the 1st Swiss city I saw and I fell in love with it instantly. Its city center/old town rises from a crook in the River Aare surrounding it on three sides and sits up high like some ornamental thingy on a birthday cake. Just look at the picture and think clean air and crisp breezes in the pines. Then read on.
Bern is the capitol of the Swiss canton by the same name, as well as the capitol of the Swiss Federation. It is also the holiday capitol of the Bernese Oberland, an area visited and written about by the likes of Rousseau, Shelley, Thackery, Longfellow and even Mark Twain, seemingly all garnering creative inspiration from the sheer beauty of the area. Mr Twain is reputed to have fallen asleep at the summit of numerous peaks for full days at a time and from Jungfrau to Lowendenkmal his quotes regarding the beauty of area are still repeated today in Bernese Oberland town lore.
Bern itself is a unique combination of the Swiss Confederation capitol and a pleasant tourist destination full of museums, shopping arcades, a world-class university, spewing fountains, entertaining clocks and architecture of antiquity as one of the few ancient European towns untouched by the raveges of World War Two. There is much to see in this seemingly sleepy town. The famed Zuetglocken clock tower, Kunstmuseum, Baregraben/bear pits, Bubdeshaus/Swiss Parliament, Alpine Museum, Cathedral of St Vincent and Dahlholzli Tierpark Zoo all conspire to keep you interested in the city of Berne much longer than at first glance. |
