We all have places we like that we have an affinity for. The moment I saw CASTLE SANT ANGELO I was in awe. Built in 139 AD by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum, it was later used surrepticiously as a barracks, a prison, a papal fortress and now it houses a museum of art and military relics. To me it is multi faceted and reeks of mystery...it even has a secret tunnel out the back so it would be possible to elude capture and fade into the night.

CASTEL SAN ANGELO certainly isnt the biggest attraction in ROME but the entry bridge accross the Tiber river is both fascinating and has a number of impressive statues lining the balestrades on either side.

THE COLOSSEUM...Probably the most recognised and most visited site in Rome. Built in the 1st century AD it seated 50,000 people in its heyday and would rival most American National Football Stadiums in present day. A sad fact is at one time the its stone structure was actually quarried and used for other buildings around Rome. It is impossible to see this structure and not visualise past events and plug into its enormous energy. The concept of BREAD and CIRCUSES in its ultimate and original form. It's events would be tantamount to the SUPERBOWL as a sociol/cultural event today. The Detriot Lions might play the Minnesota Vikings...the winner would be on the post-game interview with Dennis Miller,,,the loser would become a post-game meal. The stakes were pretty high then...

With a little imagination this arch could be in Paris or Greenwich Village. thats what it reminded me of.It marks the East end of the FORUM nearest the COLOSSEUM.
