ROMA All the Glory

by Michael_D - last update: Sep 11, 2002

Present day ROME assaults the senses. Its busy, hectic, beautifull...its sights, sounds and smells leave you whirling and after awhile you realise you are PASSING more interesting ancient sights than you ever have time to see. The entire time you are there the idea of toga clad centurians and impossible architectual feats are waiting below the surface of you consciousness. Even if you havent seen the movie GLADIATOR its not possible to see somethimg like the COLOSSEUM and not feel the energy of the events that occurred there in history and yet marvel at how peacefull and almost forlorn it looks today. Like some weary sleeping giant the city of ROME allows us to scale it body and forage through its private bits without so much as interupting its much needed sleep. It is too busy dreamily reminiscing about events long past to notice a huge metropolis has festered on its skin with its scurrying tourists and fume spewing buses. History is never more than a sidestreet or metrostop away...and somehow the sleeping giant remains dormant and non-plussed at the throngs of site-seekers that flock to Rome year in and year out.
If it woke up...there would be too many stories to tell and where would it start? Like in all fairy tales..it is best to let sleeping giants lie and be content with what it allows us to enjoy. I am content to tiptoe through THE ETERNAL CITY and be resolved that I shall almost surely never see it all or understand all it would have to tell. The lithograph is a picture frozen in time...no people in it, just a representation of how Rome might have looked in ancient times in black and white...WE get to fill in our own colors....
