Rajec chateau is an example of late Baroque architecture, indirectly influenced by the thinking of French Classicism. It was built between 1763 and 1769, evidently by the architect, Franz A. Grimm of Brno, for Count Anton Salm-Reifferscheidt. The building has two floors with a mansard attic below the roof. It facades have shallow, sculpturally executed elements, above which the regular rhythm of their coloured articulation prevails. The interiors of the chateau were built throughout the 19th century. Apart from the remarkable functional interiors, the library, and particularly the picture gallery, attract attention. The latter is not a typical gallery of a nobleman intended for representational purposes only. It contains a collection which originated on the basis of an inherited feeling of art. Thus, a compact collection of European paintings of the 17th to the 19th centuries period came into being. |
