I have just spent a lovely weekend with my rowing club in Heidelberg.

I arrived Saturday afternoon after a short drive and a lovely stop in Darmstadt - Germany's Art Nouveau capital, half an hour from Heidelberg. Of course a thunderstorm arrived only shortly after me so there was my first opportunity to take dramatic pictures.

I had been to Heidelberg before but it's already more than 10 years ago. Back then we stopped here for an hour or two on the way to Switzerland. All we saw back then was the funicular railway, the castle and McDonalds.

This time I saw much more. In the evening we had a barbeque at the river and afterwards we made a massive pub crawl through Heidelberg's fantastic pubs. Read more about them in my Nightlife tips.

The next morning the rain was back when we woke up after a short and uncomfortable night in the rowing club's gym. The others went rowing -I went sightseeing. That's what I was here for after all - apart from partying and meeting my friends of course. The sun came back as soon as I started walking from the rowing club to the old bridge. Yippeee! A nice day was lying ahead of me!

Apart from going up to the castle and hanging around the river I walked around the old town for ages. I loved this part of town - it has this certain old times charm that makes you feel like being in a different century. Late Sunday afternoon I left Heidelberg now knowing why this place attracts so many tourists!!!

I came back for a day and a night because of the Robbie Williams concert nearby in 2006. An in 2008 I spent a lazy afternoon here during the VT Euromeet which took place in Karlsruhe nearby.
