Wombat's: The best hostel in Europe?

I stayed at Wombat's hostel for three nights in August 2006. What a great place! Its best feature definitely is that it's spotless clean. (Voted Cleanest hostel in the world in 2003) I have seen so many hotels which were so dirty. The managers should stay at Wombat's some day. Or even better: How about an internship? ;) If the lobby wasn't that colourful, the people here weren't that young and the furniture wasn't so basic you would forget easily that you are in a hostel! Prices are very fair. We paid 24 EUR per person for a bed in an ensuite double room, half the price of the dirty hotel we had to move to for one night. Breakfast is available for 3.50 EUR, sheets and towel are included in the price. Staff was very friendly and international. There's a bar downstairs which is open from 6pm to 2 am. It's loud and cheap in there. A beer during happy hour costs 1 EUR, and a pizza is available for 3.90. There's a pool table and a table football available in the bar, too. The location 10 mts away from Westbahnhof is ok. I felt safe around there, the only not-so-nice-area is the Westbahnhof itself. At Mariahilfer Straße only a short walk from the hostel there's a bakery, shops, a supermarket and an excellent ice cream shop!
Unique Qualities: We stayed in two different double rooms. One was a handicapped room with a huge bathroom including tub and a double bed. The other one was a room under the roof with a nice view of Vienna by night, two single beds and a colourful bathroom. Both were clean. The only small problem was that the sheets of the double bed didn't really fit. But apart from that: Perfect! Wombat's have recently opened another hostel in the same area (directly on Äußere Mariahilfer Straße). It looks at least as great, a bit more stylish even.

During our stay in Vienna we stayed in this hotel for one night as work paid for this night. Thank god we only came here to sleep for a few hours and to meet the colleagues. The lobby looked welcoming so we were looking forward to a nice hotel with a great breakfast buffet and nice rooms after having stayed in a hostel for two nights. We were so disappointed!! The hotel was filthy (there should be a law against putting carpet into a hotel room)! Apparently the owners started to refurbish the hotel some day and after having finished a few rooms they ran out of money, time or enthusiasm. Some of the rooms were old and dirty, ours was kinda half-new and dirty. Others I saw were not renovated at all and looked terrible, definitely not suitable for a *** hotel.
Unique Qualities: In the bathroom the water wouldn't flow off, it stood in the sink for hours. There was water dripping from the bottom of the sink onto the floor so in the morning the bathroom floor was completely wet, at least like this the sink was empty again ;) I guess the wet feet of hundreds of visitors before us were the reason for the filthy carpet. No-smoking rooms were not available, according to the receptionist they don't make a difference between smoking and no-smoking. So the smell in our room was not very nice neither - we had to light a cigarette to at least turn the smell of cold smoke into the smell of warm smoke ;) The breakfast in the tiny breakfast room was very unimaginative and boring. You got your coffee from one of those instant coffee machines ... imagine this in coffee heaven Vienna! For close to 100 EUR for a double room a night (we got a group rate even!) I definitely expect a bit more. I don't need a palace but cleanliness and a few "small things" like a book or a chocolate or a welcome note on the bed or a nicer breakfast would help. I can't recommend staying in this hotel. The only good thing about it is the location near Karlsplatz really.
