You can't go to Newcastle without going down to the river (Quayside) and admire the bridges! The skyline is fantastic! There's 7 bridges along the river Tyne connecting Newcastle with its neighbour Gateshead. All are at different levels which makes the view down the river very interesting. It's always a few of the bridges you see! I'll introduce 4 of the bridges to you in the next tips.

This bridge looks like the little brother of Sydney's Harbour Bridge. It was opened in 1928 - four years before the one in Sydney was opened and back then it was the largest single span bridge in the world. Guess which bridge broke the record 4 years later ;) Both bridges were built by Dorman Long from Middlesbrough.

And once again: A new Millennium Bridge. Seems like every city needs one these days ;) This bridge is special though: When ships want to pass it doesn't lift, it turns! I would have loved to see this but we missed it by a few minutes. There's a sign at the bridge telling visitors at what time it opens.

This is my favourite bridge I think. Opened in 1849 it is also the oldest of Newcastle's bridges as well as the highest - hence the name. The bridge is a combined railway and road bridge - actually the first of its kind! The top level is for trains, the road is on the level underneath.

Swing Bridge got its name because it swings. Amazing name eh? When a ship wants to pass the whole bridge move around its central point. Swing Bridge is the 2nd bridge from the front on this picture (The low one).

The old Baltic Flour Mill in Gateshead (=South bank of river Tyne) was turned into an art museum not too long ago. It's free (as usual in England! Love it), it's huge and it's a great museum with changing exhibitions. There's a public viewing terrace with great views of the river and nice reflection of the bridges in the windows.

There are five funny signs outside the BALTIC. As I love sign I had to take pictures of each of them of course. They are in a travelogue on this page. Don't ask me why they are there, I guess it's some art project. I just loved them :)

At Quayside close to Millennium bridge there are many fancy sculptures and modern bars and buildings. There even were some little areas where you could eat and drink outside - something which unfortunately isn't very common in England. A nice place for a walk!

Poor Bessie Surtees! She was the daughter of a rich Newcastle family and fell in love with John Scott, a poor coal merchant's son. However, her parents didn't accept the poor fella to become her husband. So on the night of 18 November 1772 she climbed out of the window in the first floor of this house and they escaped to Scotland where they got married. He later became Lord Chancellor of England and Earl of Eldon. Not a too bad choice after all ;) The house is open from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays. Admission is free. We only had a look from the outside though!

barryg23 Wed Feb 14, 2007 19:10 UTC Haha, love the Newcastle girls tip. I've heard there are no cloakrooms in Newcastle nightclubs as the girls never wear any! Looking forward to seeing all those bridges too, I think our hotel is on the quayside. | diocletianvs Sat Jun 17, 2006 11:13 UTC "Of all the cities I have seen during my trip to England it was Newcastle I liked best." - And I can see why ;) How could I not discover this page earlier?
