I spent a few days on Inishmore, the biggest of the Aran Islands in 2001. It's a wonderful place full of impressive cliffs and scenery, nature and .. hmmmm tourists ;-) It's quiet until the first ferry of the day arrives and from then on there's herds of tourists on bikes and in busses everywhere. We succeeded in finding some deserted spots tho!
In 2005 I came back with my colleagues on a company trip. We only stayed for a day, cycled along the coast road in the rain and tried to escape the tourists best we could (=not visit Dun Angus ;). It was a fantastic day!
Kilronan is the main "town" of Inishmore. There's approx. three pubs, a supermarket, a few schools and tourist shops, one decent restaurant and a bank that opens twice a week there! And I lost my bet once claiming that they definitely have an ATM machine ;-) No way!!! Back then they didn't. Now they have one - inside the supermarket. I guess the times they are changing even on the Aran Islands....
Inishmore is full of historic forts and breathtaking cliffs. I liked the nature best, the island is green and grey, just fields and stone walls. There's lots of birds living here, you hear the herons in the distance all day! Our favourite fort was "off the beaten path" so we were able to escape all the tourists for a while :)
- Pros:Ancient forts, green fields, stone walls, flowers, birds ... heaven!
- Cons:In summer it gets crowded as soon as the first ferry arrives!
- In a nutshell:A beautiful and wild island!

Ahhhh, I don't know what you mean by putting '' '' around the word TOWN in your description, Kilronan IS classed as a township and it is the main one on Inishmore Island so it is in fact a town!
Dun Aengus is amazing--imagine what it took to create this!!
Rent a bike, luckily you have some bikes on the background -lol- great informative page, useful information and beautiful photos.
i'm home for xmas and trying my best to catch up on seeing ireland - evidently i still have lots to see!
Hi Sabsi, Deine vielen Irlandseiten neu zu sortieren ist ja eine Heidenarbeit. Bleib am Ball!
