"Steinhuder Meer" Steinhude by sabsi

The Steinhuder Meer is a large lake not far from Hannover. We used to go there a lot for a few hours. You can go for a wlk along the lake, rent a pedal boat and you should make sure not to forget buying an eel here!

Pedal boats

We went here on the first warm spring day in 2002, and went to the island of Wilhelmstein by pedal boat. It was a beautiful day. The problem on beautiful days here is that it gets really crowded, all inhabitants of Hannover seem to go to Steinhude then. It's a nightmare sometimes to even find a place to park your car then!

We also went here on sunny winter days a lot. It's less crowded then and very quiet and beautiful.
The lake freezes over quite easily and as it's not deep you can go iceskating here easily. Even if you break it won't be too dangerous as it is so shallow. I think... luckily I never tried it ;-)

• Pros:Nice lake, boat trips, walks and eel sandwiches
• Cons:Too crowded on sunny days!
