"Hvitträsk - A trip into architectural history" Luoma by sabsi
Luoma Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 19 photos
Hvitträsk is the former home of Finnish architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. It is located in Kirkkonummi which is a part of Luoma - half an hour away from Helsinki by car. A side trip from Helsinki I can really recommend if you like architecture and interieur design.
The houses of Hvitträsk were built between 1901–1903 by Gesellius, Lindgren and Saarinen.
The main building which is built in beautiful National Romantic style is built of stone and of logs. Here Saarinen and Lindgren lived and worked for some years with their families. Nowadays this building is the museum.
Gesellius lived in the courtyard building which is now a cafeteria and a restaurant.
In the museum you will find a wonderful interieur design and many little details. Saarinen's wife designed the pattern for curtains and table cloth - you will find the same beautiful design everywhere. There are also many handmade rugs and pieces of furniture everywhere. It's absolutely amazing to walk through the house and see all this.
- Pros:Beautiful park, lake, buildings and designs
- Cons:It's not very well signposted and hard to find.
- In a nutshell:Great side trip from Helsinki.

All that time in Europe and I never made a sauna. Maybe I am just shy. ;)
Brilliant!!! Everyday I learn something new, and today I learn from you, thanks :-)
Excellent page about this Finnish gem. The funny thing is that I once had a business visitor from Kirkkonummi ... I think it is about time that I visit this place .. :o)
The 1900 expo in Paris must have been one of the most amazing in history... I would have loved ot have a childrens room like that. Well don Sabs
hi! cool and personal views of this interesting place. Did you know that Sibelius "found" the first finnish rock painting which was brought to a broader knowledge close to Hvitträsk in 1911?
Great "architectural" page. How could I miss this when I was there? Oh - just another reason to visit Finland again. Great comments, and the intro pic is one of my favorites - as you already know ;)
