Things To Do: Altes Schloss - overview
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Altes Schloss (Old Castle) was erected by Duke Wilhelm V of the family Wittelsbach between 1597 and 1616. It is very beautiful outside, but it is even more interesting inside, where you can visit a museum about Preußen (Prussia) as well as an exhibition of cribs from all over the world. I don't know if this exhibition was temporary or if it is permanent.
The ticket costs 2-3 euro for adults and 1 euro for students. If you want to visit also the Neues Schloss and the Schloss Lustheim, you'd better buy an inclusive ticket for around 6 euro.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: Prussian ship
  • Tip Rating:
  • The museum hosts a collection of things about Preußen, the country from where modern Deutschland originated. I think these objects are exhibited in Bayern because the family came originally from that country, but I'm not sure.
Here, you see a Prussian ship. Preußen occuped the region on the Baltic Sea as far as today's Polska (Poland) and Baltic republics, therefore sea played an important role in its economy.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: Danzig
  • Tip Rating:
  • Danzig (today Gdañsk in Polska) lied on the "Amber way" and was the most important city of Preußen at the time of the biggest extension of this kingdom, under Friedrich II Hohenzollern.
These photos show a bottle of liqueur from Danzig, local banknotes, the city coat of arms and a painting. I'm almost sure that it portrays Danzig, since the water could be the Baltic Sea, but it could also represent Königsberg (see next tip).

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: Königsberg
  • Tip Rating:
  • I'm almost sure that this painting portrays Königsberg, but it could also represent Danzig (see previous tip).
Königsberg was one of the most important, if not the most important Prussian cities, especially from the cultural point of view. Many Germans will be proud to tell you that it is there that philosopher of the Enlightenment Immanuel Kant was born, wrote his great (boring, I would say) books and died.
Unfortunately, when the city passed under Russia and the USSR, taking the present name of Kaliningrad, its importance started to decline. Today Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave between Polska and Lietuva and his location has become a problem since the two countries joined the European Union in 2004 and inhabitants from Kaliningrad are being asked for a visa to travel to the rest of Russia. I hope this issue will be solved soon.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: Lithuanian clothes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Oberschleißheim - Lithuanian clothes
  • Lithuanian clothes
  • by Mikebond
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • These were (and still are, I suppose), typical clothes from Litauen (today Lietuva, Lithuania).
You may wonder why Lithuanian clothes are exposed in a museum about Preußen. Yes, you have guessed it! Also Litauen was part of the great Prussian Kingdom and present Vilnius was called Vilna.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: the Emperor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please, have a break with the exhibition and admire the rooms and the furniture, such as this nice fireplace: on the top it is written in gold "MAXIMILIANVS BAV(IERÆ): DUX S(ACRI):R(OMANI):I(MPERII): ELECTOR", that is approximately "Maximilian Duke of Bayern, Elector of the Sacre Roman Empire". You may know that the elector-princes were those who used to elect the Emperor of the Sacre Roman Empire.
The decoration of the door in the second photo shows the "M" of Emperor Maximilian.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - museum: amber
  • Tip Rating:
  • Amber was the economically most important product for the Baltic area, where the famous "Amber way" started from.
Amber is a fossil resin that very often has insects or other little animals inside. It is widely used to product jewels.

Things To Do: Altes Schloss - exhibition: cribs of the world
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have visited this exhibition very quickly because I had not much time and still had to visit the Neues Schloss. However, it is very interesting.
This crib comes from Andalucía (España).
